Depart Nairobi in the morning and drive north towards Samburu National Reserve, crossing the Equator and passing through changing landscapes that gradually open into the rugged semi-arid scenery of northern Kenya. Despite its harsh climate, Samburu is home to unique wildlife species rarely found elsewhere. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive in search of Samburu’s special wildlife. Dinner and overnight at Samburu Sopa Lodge or Samburu Serena Lodge.
Spend a full day exploring Samburu National Reserve with morning and afternoon game drives. Look out for the rare Samburu Special Five, including the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards are also commonly sighted, alongside a variety of plains game. An optional visit to a Samburu village can be arranged to experience local culture. After breakfast, depart Samburu and drive south via the scenic Mount Kenya region and Thomson’s Falls. Arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park in time for lunch. The park is also home to rhinos, lions, buffaloes, and other wildlife, with all of the Big Five present except elephants. Enjoy breakfast before departing for the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve, driving across the scenic Loita Plains. Along the way, observe Maasai herders in their traditional red attire tending livestock across the savannah. After breakfast, depart with picnic lunches for a full-day game drive inside the reserve. Masai Mara is renowned for its abundance of wildlife, including black-maned lions, cheetahs, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, zebras, wildebeests, and gazelles.
